Shout London – “Someday” – catchy, deep and genuine!
Music in the mainstream is frequently washed out and monotonous. It’s designed to appeal to the masses, hence with a simple formula. Shout London makes music that is just as catchy and accessible for the mainstream, but also deep and genuine. He writes songs that anyone can relate to and enjoy. On his latest single, “Someday” – the first released after a 7-year hiatus – Shout London has proven to be much more than his seemingly simple alt-rock and pop exterior illustrates. He is able to take advantage of all that makes him technically and vocally relevant, and hone that into something that feels comparable to an emotional sonic canvas. You can’t help but be taken on a small journey for the few minutes that the song lasts, and that’s what makes Shout London so remarkable.
Shout London is in fact, the project is the brainchild of Cambridge, UK based singer-songwriter, TJ Whiting. Shout London first impacted the scene in 2013 with a self-titled EP, followed by the debut album, “Rememories” in the same year. The deluxe album, “Rewrite the Past” appeared in 2014 along with a string of successful singles.
Supported by a backing band, TJ Whiting has played at the 2013 Van’s Warped Tour and the 2013 Bryan Stars Tour and opened for the Goo Goo Dolls and Young the Giant at SunFest in 2014. He has also shared stages with include Go Radio, Melanie Martinez, Echosmith, JT Woodruff (Hawthorne Heights), and Brook Betts (Mayday Parade).
Influenced by Mayday Parade, The Summer Set, The Early November, and A Day to Remember, on his first album TJ Whiting collaborated with well-known recording engineer and music producer Andrew Wade.
The new track, “Someday”, is a prime example of the depth and dynamic that make Shout London so special. Finding its way into the middle ground of emotional lyrics, the vocals are articulated and sharp, punctuating the melody as required. This gives the song the edge it needs to really stand out, and earn its significance.
“Someday” creates a sublime musical experience with its clean strummed guitars, throbbing drumbeat, and sweeping strings topped by richly layered vocal harmonies. The sound is at once urgent, yet lush and smooth, as Shout London lays down the heartfelt storyline: “I dug out your old suitcase. You know the teal one that you left here underneath our bed. I started packing up all my things. Ready to escape all of the memories that you had left.”
TJ Whiting has a voice that is far from inaccessible, yet unique and powerful. It seems to carry a tone that soothes the ear, and lingers in the soul, and is apparent throughout #Someday. While it would be an absolute delight to see Shout London overtake the merits of this single, to do so would require some real hard work indeed, as this is top tier material.
What #ShoutLondon have done here is create a track completely devoid of fluff. TJ Whiting has crafted a meticulous piece of music with affecting lyrics and ravishing vocals, that you never want to stop listening to.
